RGB Networks Enables European Cable Operators
to Deliver 50 Percent More VOD Programming
with Dynamic Bandwidth Manager

Industry’s Only Real-time VOD Transrating Solution Allows
for‘Drop-in’Network Upgrades

United Kingdom – May 26, 2009—RGB Networks, the leader in network video processing, is introducing its Dynamic Bandwidth Manager (DBM) to European cable operators, enabling them to dramatically expand their video-on-demand (VOD) offerings leveraging existing QAM and fiber infrastructure. Utilizing RGB’s DBM, the industry’s pioneering VOD transrater, operators can deliver up to 50 percent more VOD programming within existing bandwidth through advanced transrating technology.
As European on-demand digital TV enters a fast growth phase with pay, free time-shifted TV and high definition (HD) VOD, the DBM offers a simple and quick way to get more out of existing transmission infrastructure. In typical VOD deployments, cable operators deliver 13 standard definition (SD) VOD programs per 8 MHz QAM channel, with each program allocated a fixed amount of bandwidth. Using RGB’s proven transrating capability to continually adjust the bit rates of the individual programs based on a statistical multiplexing algorithm that maximizes video quality, the DBM enables 20 or more SD programs to be carried in the same amount of bandwidth. The DBM achieves this level of bandwidth efficiency while maintaining optimum picture quality. The DBM also allows operators to increase the number of HD VOD programs they offer, as it can similarly reduce the bandwidth requirements of HD programming.
“RGB’s Dynamic Bandwidth Manager was developed to enable the wide-scale delivery of advanced, on-demand cable services by dramatically increasing operators’ available bandwidth,” said Ramin Farassat, Vice President of Product Marketing for RGB Networks. “The DBM’s capabilities have already been proven to reclaim up to 50 percent of existing bandwidth, which can be used for more VOD or other services.”
“The advanced architecture of the DBM allows operators to perform a simple ‘drop-in’ network upgrade, immediately saving bandwidth in specific congested spots or network-wide without degrading the quality of the video,” said Sarah Hackforth, Vice President of EMEA. “The substantial bandwidth saved by the DBM can be used for new, revenue-generating services such as HD VOD.”
The DBM is exceptionally easy to deploy as it transrates VOD programs in real-time, eliminating the need for complicated pre-processing of the programs and any complex integration with VOD servers. Operators simply plug the DBM into existing VOD deployments as it is compatible with all the major components of an end-to-end VOD system, including VOD servers, resource managers and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) modulators. With the ability to process nearly 1000 streams, the one-rack-unit DBM offers very high density, minimizing operating expenditures and rack space.
Complementing its real-time transrating performance is the DBM’s extremely low latency, which ensures that subscribers will experience no noticeable differences when using VOD’s fast forward, rewind and pause ‘trickplay’ features. The DBM also supports industry-standard SNMP, Java, and HTTP interfaces for control and monitoring, allowing easy-to-use element management and integration into SNMP-compliant network management systems.
RGB Networks will demonstrate the DBM at its stand (B50) at the ANGA Cable show, May 26-28, in Cologne, Germany, providing a side-by-side quality comparison of VOD content before and after transrating.
