Boingo wireless aquires Sprint's Wi-Fi network operations at seven U.S. airports
World's Leading Airport Network Operator Increases Footprint, Enhances Service and Options for Business Travelers in All Seven Airports
Boingo Wireless Inc., which provides access to the world's largest network of Wi-Fi hotspots, today announced that it has acquired seven airport Wi-Fi networks from Sprint (NYSE: S). Operations in all seven airports have been successfully converted to BoingoR hotspots.
Sprint customers will retain Wi-Fi access in these seven airports and will gain access to 16 additional airports where Boingo provides Wi-Fi services directly. Additionally, the companies have entered into a roaming agreement that will provide Sprint customers access to Boingo's global hotspot network.
As part of the conversion, Boingo lowered the price of day pass access in these locations to $7.95 for 24 hours of access. Travelers who sign up for a Boingo access can also use that account in more than 100,000 hotspots around the world. In addition, Boingo is adding more bandwidth for several of the airports to enhance the user experience and ensure that business travelers have the speed they need.
"Travelers need fast, reliable Internet access wherever they are, and they need to know they can get connected wherever they're going," said Dave Hagan, CEO and president of Boingo Wireless. "In providing the Wi-Fi service at 23 major airports, we're bringing each and every passenger an option for convenient Wi-Fi access at their point of departure; by enabling access at more than 100,000 hotspots around the world, we ensure their ability to connect again at their ultimate destination."
This acquisition increases the number of airport networks operated by Boingo and its Concourse subsidiary from 16 to 23, covering 37 percent of passenger enplanements in the top 100 North American airports. The new airports include Houston William P Hobby (HOU), Houston George Bush Intercontinental (IAH), Memphis International (MEM), Milwaukee General Mitchell International (MKE), Oakland International (OAK), Louisville International-Standifer Field (SDF), and Salt Lake City International (SLC).
Through its Concourse Communications subsidiary, Boingo also provides Wi-Fi service at: Atlanta-Hartsfield Jackson (ATL), Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport (AZO), Nashville International Airport (BNA), Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW), Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), LaGuardia Airport (LGA), Midway International Airport (MDW), Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP), Will Rogers International Airport (OKC), Chicago O'Hare (ORD), San Juan International Airport (SJU), Lambert-St. Louis International Airport (STL), Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), and Ottawa International Airport (YOW).
"As the world leader in wireless network installations in airports, we understand what it takes to deliver high quality service," said Hagan. "We're diversifying Boingo's service base, creating new revenue streams, and bringing seven more airports and thousands of travelers within the fold of the world's largest aggregated network of more than 100,000 hotspots."
Travelers who visit any of these airports can purchase Internet access from Boingo Wireless for $7.95 per day. For frequent travelers, Boingo offers several service options for laptops and Wi-Fi enabled devices. Boingo Unlimited is a monthly access plan for laptops that costs $21.95 for unlimited access to thousands of hotspots in North America. Boingo Global is a $39-per-month flat-rate plan for access to Boingo's hotspots worldwide. Boingo Mobile enables global access to the Internet via Boingo hotspots for non-PC devices such as PDAs and dual-mode phones for $7.95-per-month.
