SenSage Awarded Patent For Breakthrough Event Data Management Technology
Solidifies the Unique Foundation of SenSage's Award-Winning Security Analytics and Log Management Solutions
SAN FRANCISO, CA - June 6, 2006 - SenSage, Inc., the leading provider of enterprise security analytics, has been awarded a patent covering the company's breakthrough approach for optimizing the storage and analysis of event log data. SenSage's Scalable Log Server technology, covered by U.S. Patent #7,024,414 awarded last month, enables high-speed query and reporting of large, diverse event log data while dramatically lowering the storage and operational costs associated with retaining and assessing that data.
SenSage offers enterprise-class security software that automates processes which reduce risks due to security threats, insider violations, system outages, and compliance. According to industry research firms, the Security Information Management (SIM) market segment has distinct retention and analysis requisites to meet security monitoring, compliance and audit demands. SenSage was awarded the first patent within the SIM market segment that uniquely removes relational database management technology (RDBMS) limitations that affect functional performance and on-going expenditures.
"Capturing, managing and using event data for operational and security assurance is a high-value application," said Peter Christy, research analyst and co-founder of Internet Research Group. "SenSage's Scalable Log Server technology demonstrates clearly that the unique demands of this application enables purpose-engineered data management technologies to far outperform conventional database systems. This patent award validates SenSage's technical innovation."
In order to maintain compliance with corporate, industry and regulatory security guidelines, as well respond to bended and internal threats, organizations implement process controls such as monitoring activity regarding privileged user access, system integrity and sensitive data use. All these tasks demand long-term retention and analysis of event log data. This event log data, generated by network operating systems, network devices and applications, must be consistently captured and correlated in near real-time and assessed against appropriately preserved long-term data stores to support security best practices and to expedite forensic investigations.
SenSage's patented data management technology helps organizations overcome the daunting challenge of aggregating, storing and analyzing large and diverse stores of event log data. This information presents organizations with costly data management problems because it often consumes terabytes of storage and processing capacity. This same data must also be maintained with integrity and immediately accessible. Many compliance regulations mandate that this information be reviewed and preserved for up to five years. Conventional security information management (SIM) products can be ill equipped to keep pace with and utilize the growing event data volumes because they're limited in performance, efficiency and capacity due to their reliance on RDBMS technology.
"This patent continues to validate the unique benefits of SenSage's Scalable Log Server technology as the best means to analyze and retain event log data for security, compliance, and root cause analysis," said Jim Pflaging, president and CEO of SenSage. "SenSage was the first and only vendor to implement this purpose-built approach from the initial founding of the company. From a value perspective, and unlike alternative offerings, we give customers the proven means to maximize the rich information found in event log data while radically improving user productivity and reducing operational costs."
SenSage's Scalable Log Server technology enables high-speed queries and optimized storage against massive event log data stores and yields efficient centralized data management. Utilizing the patented technology, SenSage has the means store event data in only 2.5% of the hard disk space required by conventional SIM systems that utilize RDBMS. This compressed storage not only reduces hardware costs, but also speeds up data loading and query performance because only 2.5% of the I/O is required to scan through high volumes of data. Furthermore, by avoiding RDMBS or distributed local data store limitations, SenSage's purpose build solution requires less system administration, negates the need for constant index tuning, reduces archive and restore processes, and eliminates local data extraction bottlenecks. As a result, SenSage is able to offer organizations of all sizes the most effective solution to bridge real-time event correlation and historic forensic event analysis.
As corroborated by numerous industry research firms, the SIM market has evolved in the last couple of years well beyond incident management to focus more on compliance auditing, monitoring and investigation - where customers must store and analyze massive and growing amounts of event log data. SenSage's patented Scalable Log Server technology reduces the costs of storing, by up to 40:1, and accelerates log data analysis / reporting when compared to competitive SIM approaches relying on RDMBS technology.
SenSage applied for the patent in 2001 and received award notification in April 2006. The technology covered by the patent serves as the core intellectual property from which SenSage was founded and will extend.
