Real-Time Target Localization in Radiation Therapy Explored

CalypsoR Medical Technologies, Inc. Investigators Present Progress at ASTRO's 47th Annual Meeting

Denver, CO - October 16, 2005 - Reports of scientific investigations of CalypsoR Medical's Calypso 4DR Localization System will be presented at the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) 47th Annual Meeting. These abstracts discuss investigations for real-time target localization and tumor tracking employing implanted wireless sensors called BeaconR transponders and the Calypso 4D Localization System in a variety of potential clinical applications.

Current methods of marking a tumor's location for radiation therapy include skin tattoos, snapshot x-ray images, and ultrasound images to align tumor targets prior to treatment. These methods lack the ability to continuously locate the target's movement during treatment. The Calypso 4D Localization System is an investigational platform that is expected to provide a means to position patients and continuously track the tumor's position for external beam radiation therapy that is accurate, objective and efficient without the additional radiation dose delivered when using other methods.

CalypsoR Medical's technology will be highlighted in five scientific abstracts presented at the ASTRO 47th Annual Meeting in Denver at the Colorado Convention Center, October 16-20, 2005, and published simultaneously in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology ? Physics. The Calypso System will be available for demonstration viewing at CalypsoR Medical's booth, No. 201.

  • 4D Verification of RT Accuracy of Calypso System with Lung Cancer Patient Trajectory Data
Presented by Parag Parikh, MD; Washington University School of Medicine; Oct. 17, 10:15 - 11:45 a.m., Rooms 401-404
Dr. Parikh received the ASTRO 2005 Resident/Clinical Basic Science Research Award. This one-time award is designed to promote clinical research by young scientists and is granted to the top three resident authors of significant abstracts submitted to ASTRO's Annual Meeting in physics, biology and clinical practice.
  • Feasibility of AC Electromagnetic Localization for Radiation Therapy Head and Neck Cancer
    Presented by Timothy P. Mate, MD; Swedish Medical Center; Oct. 17, 10:15 - 11:45 a.m., Room 301
  • Clinical Experience With The Calypso 4D Localization System In Prostate Cancer Patients: Implantation, Tolerance, Migration, Localization and Real Time Tracking
    Presented by Patrick Kupelian, MD; M. D. Anderson Cancer Center Orlando; Oct. 19, 10:15 - 11:45 a.m., Room 205
  • Real time Prostate Translation, Rotation, and Deformation as Evaluated using Calypso Beacon transponder data
    Presented by Doug Burch, CMD; M. D. Anderson Cancer Center Orlando; Oct. 19, 10:15 - 11:45 a.m., Room 301

CalypsoR Medical began pivotal clinical studies in July 2005 for patients with prostate cancer receiving external beam radiation therapy to evaluate system usability and safety of this investigational system. The study is taking place at leading cancer treatment facilities.
