Leading Cancer Centers Commence Clinical Study for Prostate Cancer Patients Receiving External Beam Radiation Therapy
Seattle, WA - July 19, 2005 - CalypsoR Medical Technologies, Inc. today announced that it has begun clinical studies for patients with prostate cancer receiving external beam radiation therapy. The study will evaluate the usability and safety of an investigational patient positioning system as an accessory in radiation therapy delivery (CalypsoR 4D Localization System with permanently implanted BeaconR transponders). The CalypsoR System is designed to provide objective, accurate and continuous tumor location information for external beam radiation therapy without additional ionizing radiation.
The study will take place at clinical facilities that were selected based on their extensive experience in radiation therapy for prostate cancer and desire to bring new technology to their patients. The study evaluates permanently implanted transponders in the prostate that communicate with the CalypsoR System to guide positioning of the patient for daily radiation treatment. The study will also evaluate the positioning system to continuously track the position of the prostate.
"We expect this investigational platform to provide information on organ motion so that clinicians can better manage treatment during external beam radiation therapy," said Eric Meier, president and CEO, CalypsoR Medical. "For the first time, it will be possible for clinicians to track the treatment target location continuously throughout treatment. In the future, with increased confidence of knowing where the target is at all times, the clinician may explore expanded treatment delivery options."
Current sites participating in the clinical study include MD Anderson Cancer Center Orlando, The Nebraska Medical Center, Scottsdale Healthcare, Cleveland Clinic, and Sharp Memorial Hospital.
In 2005, over 232,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, more than half of whom will receive radiation therapy to treat the disease.
