MicroMed Cardiovascular, Inc. has developed promising ventricular assist device (VAD) technologies for the treatment of congestive heart failure (CHF), a disease that afflicts 15 million people worldwide and five million in the U.S. More than 550,000 new cases of CHF are diagnosed each year.

Heart transplantation is traditionally the only treatment hope for most late-stage CHF patients. Due to the lack of donor hearts, there are only 2,500 heart transplants performed each year in the United States and a similar number occur in Europe. While patients with this progressive disease are still treated with drug therapy, a VAD can be critical to their saving life while they wait for a donor heart.

MicroMed intends to provide a reliable, lower cost, miniaturized VAD. The MicroMed DeBakey VADR is initially targeted for Class IV, end-stage heart failure patients as a "bridge to cardiac transplant".

In the near future, MicroMed believes that VADs have the potential to be used as Destination Therapy, Acute Myocardial Infarction, and to bridge to recovery. There are in excess of 300,000 patients that can use the DeBakey VADR in these four indications. What is exciting in this fourth indication is the opportunity for growth factors or drugs such as "cleubuterol" to stimulate regrowth for the heart as the pump provides the rest and assistance.
